Comparison - Apple iPad 3 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)
by Lim Pei Hao
05 April 2012 – In this comparison, we will pair the Apple’s 3rd Generation iPad (iPad 3) against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0).
Both tablets are powered by a 1.0 GHz dual core processor with 1GB of RAM and have a front-facing camera for video chats. At the time of writing, both tablets are running on the latest version of their respective operating systems. The iPad 3 runs on the iOS 5.1 while the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 runs on Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. There are three internal storage variants on each of the tablet, the iPad 3 has 16/32/64GB while the Galaxy Tab 2 has 8/16/32GB. Furthermore, they are capable in recording 1080p full HD video.
On the exterior, the Apple iPad 3 has a bigger display (9.7 vs 7.0-inch) and a higher display resolution (1536 x 2048 pixels vs 600 x 1024 pixels) than the Galaxy Tab 2. It is nearly double the weight of the Galaxy Tab 2. Nevertheless, the iPad 3 is still slimmer than its competitor by a slight margin (9.4 vs 10.5mm).
In addition, the iPad 3 has a better rated camera (5 vs 3-megapixel) with LED flash. Plus, it has an f/2.4 aperture lens that allows more light to hit the image sensor, resulting in clearer and sharper images. The tablet is also equipped with a battery capacity that is almost three times what the Galaxy Tab 2 has, to support its power-hungry processor and Retina display.
On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is smaller than its rival, thus it is more portable and convenient to carry it around. It also accepts microSD cards up to 32GB in addition to the given internal storage.
Unlike its competitor, the Galaxy Tab 2 has the advantage of telephony service, which allows you to make and receive calls from the tablet. It also has a handy earpiece situated on top of the tablet, so you could hold the tablet like a huge phone to listen and talk with your callers.
In terms of pricing, the iPad 3 could have a higher price point than the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2. However, the bigger and more impressive display alone could be enough to justify the price difference. If portability is not your main concern, the iPad 3 would be a good option to consider. In contrast, the Galaxy Tab 2 would be more suitable for those who are always on the go and need a device that is a hybrid of a phone and a tablet.
